Expressions of Life aims to capture the very essence of who we are, highlighting the distinctiveness and character of each individual. A journey told through portraits. This series aims to showcase the human spirit.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap] like doing ‘urban portraits’ without asking people to pose. It’s more in the subjects’ own environment, their own place where they feel more comfortable. I didn’t want to alter anything, I go by instinct first – I approach people on the street, have an informal conversation and then, from there, see if I can capture their portrait.

FRANCISCO
“I’ve been working in Atwater for 10 years. It’s a really good place, very tranquil. I work as a machinist, we make parts for industry; stainless steel, iron and lots of things. Everything is made here, by us, made in the U.S.A. My job is great, I love it very much; one has to be responsible, one has to work to be triumphant in this country, that’s all, you just have to be strong and do what you know how to do.”

ASMIM
“I love my neighbourhood; Frogtown in Los Angeles. Everyone tells me ‘when you grow up do you wanna leave?’ I say, ‘no I wanna stay’. I can walk around and not be afraid of my environment.”

RAFAEL
“I am an artist from El Salvador. I live in the area of Frogtown, close to the L.A. River. Right now I am here in Atwater Village, I’ve been working with different areas of the community, with kids and schools. Sometimes the community participates in working with me on murals and we create great ideas together. It’s kind of a collective work.”

Ricardo Palavecino
Ricardo has been a cinematographer, videographer, and photographer for the past 30 years. He has a multicultural background with substantial international experience in documentaries, dramatic films, mini series, commercials, network promos and corporate videos. He has provided services to various television networks and production companies including, Reuters, Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, Discovery Channel, Disney Channel, Sundance Channel, Sony Pictures, AXN Japan, TV Asahi Japan, RAI Italy, and many others.
