Palomar

Raul Cutiño; bike-taxi driver, family man, and one of the 15 families that live under the same roof in downtown Habana, has a very Cuban hobby. Raul invited me to his rooftop so he could show off his dove loft. What became evident, right in front of me was one of the most popular hobbies in this country – dove breeding. Raul and his friend Alberto Botello have been building up this place, so to speak, since they were very young, and they talk about these birds as if they were professional ornithologists. They know each of the differences between the birds they have raised, their care, their needs, their international value and even the way their wings should be fixed to manipulate their way of flying.

Like with every other hobby, the financial return is not the fuel that lights the passion. That one that keeps growing in Raul and Alberto over the years. They built this place with no profit interest and today they thank these birds for filling their lives with friendships, family, recognition and pride. In a country, where having any private possession is illegal or extremely expensive, the people with passion, like these two, can still feel proud of their dove loft, their hobby.
